A merit screen, also known as a merit review, is a process conducted by one of our legal nurse consultants (LNCs) to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a legal case from a medical perspective. It involves a preliminary evaluation of the case’s medical aspects to determine whether there is sufficient merit to proceed with the litigation.
The purpose of a merit screen is to identify the key medical issues relevant to the case and evaluate the duty, breach of duty, causation and damages.
During a merit screen, our legal nurse consultant will review the medical records and other relevant documentation and create a concise picture of the records in the form of a chronology, summary of the case, and breakdown of the merit or lack thereof. Each report’s format can be customized to the client’s needs preferences.
